5 Seconds of Summer Album Review

Breakout stars, 5 Seconds of Summer, which most fans shorten to 5SOS, have been taking the music scene by storm in the past two years. Ashton, Calum, Luke, and Michael recently released their debut album, 5 Seconds of Summer on July 22nd in America. They broke records, selling 259,000 copies in the first week of it being released.

With upbeat love songs like She Looks So Perfect and Kiss Me Kiss Me, it is easy for fans to dance along in their rooms all over the world. Then when you add in their heartbreak ballad Amnesia, it will make you fall in love with the good-looking guys of the Aussie pop rock band.

The album itself has a total of 12 songs on the regular version and then an extra four songs on the deluxe version on iTunes. That is just on iTunes. They also have four different songs that are on the deluxe version exclusively from Target stores everywhere. In addition to the album they also have two EPs out that are based on two single from their album, She Looks So Perfect and Amnesia. There are four additional songs on those EPs that are not on the album.

Ashton, Calum, Luke and Michael have worked very hard on this album. They recorded several different songs for different versions of the album that went out in different countries. In addition to that, the physical copies had different bonus songs on the deluxe version of the album than the ones on a digital copy. The boys of 5SOS just wanted the best debut album they could give to their fans, so they worked extra hard on it for them.

The songs all have a catchy hook to them that makes the whole album a success. There isn’t a song in particular that is a flop in accordance to the rest of the tracks. Many of the songs on the album are up-tempo love songs, with a few mid-tempo and slower songs added in the mix. Ashton, Calum, Luke, and Michael must be familiar with young love and heartbreak because every single one of their songs is about it. From thinking a girl looks so perfect in their American apparel underwear to wanting to be eighteen so they could date an older woman to wishing they could wake up with amnesia, these boys go through all the emotions of a relationship that we know all too well.

When I was listening to the album for the first time after I bought it, I found myself saying, “I love this song!” in the beginning, middle and end of each song. I just loved them all so much. The vocals of all of the guys go so well with the music of Ashton’s drums, Michael and Luke’s guitars, and Calum’s bass guitar. In all honesty, I did listen to the whole deluxe album on repeat for over a week.

I would recommend 5 Seconds of Summer’s debut album for anyone that likes pop rock or is interested in a new up-and-coming band. These four boys from Australia are hard working and very talented. Even if you aren’t one of their typical fans (aka teenage girls) you should give them a shot because they aren’t a boyband, they are a band. They play their own instruments very well, and they put on a great live show. Give their album a listen and then judge them, because that is the only logical way to do it.

  2. I understand the genre of our topic but I'm confused about which band you're talking about because you name two in the first sentence. If you're focusing on one band I would just talk about that one band and compare them to their competition later in the review. I would also like to see headings depending on if you're talking about a specific song or the entire album. Right now, I can't differentiate the introduction with the actual review. There should also be no indentations on your sentences. By getting rid of the indents and adding spaces, this could help with hierarchy and sectioning off certain areas of topic.

Despite the organization, the voice of the review is off to a good start and keeps my attention within the first couple sentences. I also think that by adding photographs and possible hypertexts, this review could look like a review you would see on the internet. Overall there isn't enough content to understand where this review is headed. I can't even tell if you own a CD of the band or listen to them frequently through Pandora, Spotify, or your own music device. To improve this, I would use a first-person point of view. This will make the review a little more personal/relatable and not so informative.

  3. I don't believe that there is any confusion about what band she's reviewing at all. The sentence at the beginning states that fans have nicknamed the band 5 Seconds of Summer "5SOS". As a music review, the start of this review seems to be pointed in the right direction as the key points are going to be addressed. Organization seems to be going well, starting with the general overview and the breaking the band down further into the new album and then further into specific songs. I would maybe want to see an overall rating at the beginning since I feel like the music reviews I've seen before start with an overall rating, but then again some also do it at the end but a rating overall would be an positive addition to the review. The voice indicates that the review is passionate about the band which is needed to keep readers attention and so that they can see this person is knowledgeable about it. Headings should be added to make the article skimmable overall. I think links to their various social media pages would be a really good idea as well as somewhere that leads to the album in question itself. Instead of indenting to show the different paragraphs, online writings are better divided simply by returning to the next line one the thought is finished. It does the same thing as indenting but giving it cleaner lines.

  4. I like how you mentioned certain songs off of the album, and I would suggest going in depth about a song or two in the review to give the audience/readers a feel for the style of the band if they are unfamiliar with them and want to read up on them. I think the bullet points you have provided definitely meet the expectations of the genre because talking about specific songs will be important. I would suggest including an area dedicated to a little more background about the band.

Once you throw some headings in there, organization will be great and flow naturally! Your voice seems casual and conversational which is very appropriate to the genre because usually music lovers enjoy having casual conversations about tunes and music.

I think it will be important to include pictures of the album and of the band. Maybe include some links to their songs on itunes!
