Nook Color Review

An e-reader is a very convenient device to have for any reading lover. Hence the reason it was purchased for me. The Nook Color is my e-reader of choice for many reasons. Some of these reasons include it’s low-cost, light design, and high-resolution screen. A few faults that we’ll be talking about is the LCD screen, and a few quality problems. Many other companies have various products that compete with the Nook Color, but I’m going to explain why this one in particular is your best fit.

This Barnes & Noble device is similar to a tablet that offers the opportunity to read magazines, books, but also download popular and fun apps. With this first e-reader for Barnes & Noble to show color, the company is planning on expanding and expecting to create more tablets like e-readers. In this competitive market, the price that is being desired for the Nook Color is unbeatable.

Display and Feel
Looking at the product for the first time you’ll notice the 8 by 5 inch tablet is a tad heavy weighing in at 15.8 ounces. This makes the tablet quite easy to hold onto.  You’ll also notice that it displays a 32-bit full color LCD display. This display is great when reading magazine and playing apps, but it is harder on the eyes for reading books. The LCD screen makes it more difficult to read for longer amounts of time.

Usage
Barnes & Nobel Nooks have always preferred an on-screen touch system. They added a keyboard to the bottom of this product; being the 3rd time they have added this feature. The Nook color is truly great for a wide variety of ages. With the color added to this device it makes it easier to download children’s books for the younger children in your life. It also aids in being able to read magazines as if you were physically holding them, it is perfect for any magazine reader in your family. You can receive magazines as well as newspapers through the Nook Color on the specific day they arrive on the stands. When it comes to comparing this product to another, such as the Kindle. I noticed that it was easier to search for it through the Barnes & Noble data base verse looking through Amazon. Many similar reviews will state the same.

The Nook color also offers applications to use a few of these applications include; Games, Productivity, News & weather, Children, and Entertainment. With these applications you have find helpful weight loss applications for anyone looking to loose weight. You can also find children’s games such as Angry Birds to pass time while traveling. The Nook Color is mainly used for what Barnes & Noble is famous for, and that’s a book. All books are through Barnes & Noble. In order to download any of these special features you’ll need to be in an area that has wifi.

Battery Life
The battery life isn’t as great as the non-LCD color e-readers that Barnes & Noble has to offer, but puts up a good fight. If you’re in an area that offers WIFI you should expect the battery life to last longer. While playing apps and looking through magazines the Nook Color should last up to nearly 8 hours without wifi. If you’re using it just for reading it will last up to a full day worth of reading.

Hardware and Performance
Inside the Nook Color there is more internal storage including 8 gigabytes of memory. You can also add a SD card to expand to having 32 gigabytes of memory. Another new performance that the Nook Color has is being able to support file formats. The Nook Color comes with support for all of the major adobe, and Microsoft formats, making it easier to use for a business aspect.

There are many options for formatting this device. You can change the font, color and style of the text while reading a book. You can also change the settings to make reading more enjoyable and easier.

Wrap Up

Overall if you’re looking for a great e-reader the Nook Color is the best pick. With the quality and quantity it’s unbeatable. It has a great price and compared to other products, it’s really the best choice.

  1. At the end you mention that it's the best choice. But you don't do a lot of comparing. How can I trust you? Does the genre often make claims about competition without comparing? Or perhaps some comparison and contrast is necessary...

  2. I very much enjoy the casual tone of the review. The voice helps explain this product to people with very little tech/e-reader experience which is nice. Clear headings have helped the organizational qualities of this review as well. Visually, I would try and add a picture or something, maybe a link of some sort? I dunno. You decide.

  3. Genre: Yes, your reivew seems to meeting the expectations for the genre and it provides everything the reader needs to know about.

Organization: I think the flow of your review is very natural and doesn't seem jumbled at all. If I only looked at the headings, the page makes sense.

Voice: Your voice is information which is perfect for a review because then the audience will know that you have one and they will listen to what you have to say.

Headings: The headings are very clear and concise and they create a scannable website.

Visuals and hypertext: As you have no visuals currently, it would be beneficial to add a photo or two. Another idea would be to maybe add a link to the Barnes and Noble nook site so that readers can easily access it.

First hand use: Yes, it is clear the you have used this product as you mention that you own one.

  4. This review almost has me convinced to ditch the books and switch to an e-reader. The casual tone makes reading it seemed personalized and that this product is really something for the whole family. I definitely trust the voice. The overall flow of the review is well done as moving from paragraph to paragraph was easy and seemed natural. I thought the headings were appropriate and made the overall review skimmable. There were no hypertextual links or pictures, but I am sure that they are coming. Maybe a link at the end of the article to the Barnes and Nobles store site where a Nook color could be purchased would be a good idea?
